Peripatetic (A Thrust to the South)(summer 02?)

Day moves to its conclusion
but the spacing is still uneven
Dangled a bird feeder from a fencepost
a block of suet in a steel cage
but no bird appeared
a rumble of terrain vehicles
that shall inherit the earth
I “watered the huckleberries”
beds of brown pine needles
invited me – a good chance
marshes would block my progress
but it was a lunch break
so I returned to work
beneath the power lines to Saco
above the natural gas mains
yellow pencil heads that studded
a swath that thrust to the south
a service truck in the distance
defined some rural road.
